When it comes to differentiating between tomato sauce and tomato ketchup, we often tend to believe that they are the same sort of condiment; however, there is a remote difference between the two concepts. Ketchup is regarded as sauce but, not all types of sauces would be categorized as ketchup. As a key difference, ketchup makes a condiment while the sauces could be reduced to thin gravies.
If we were to follow the history of food then, we would learn that ketchup is indeed a type of sauce. The word ketchup was derived from a Chinese word “koechiap”, which translates into “brine of fish”. Alternatively, it is mentioned as spicy sauce, which is derived from a Latin word that translates into salted.
While, the differences maybe remote and negligible—there is an ongoing debate between the two types of condiments. We may use tomato ketchup with French fries but, we are also likely to add tomato sauce to soups, vegetables, and pasta for the preparation of the meals. Ketchup is made using tomatoes, spices, sugar, vinegar and acetic acid, whereas, tomato sauce is made using tomatoes, oils, vegetable stock, meat, and oil, and it rarely uses vinegar for its preparation. Also, ketchup is cold in nature, and it is never warmed up before serving, where other varieties of sauces are served hot.
To make it more understandable, ketchup is made using spices while, tomato sauce is made without spices. Also, tomato sauce doesn’t contain sugar while, tomato ketchup is loaded with heaps of sugar and sweet onions and sweet onions.
